Not typically a huge fan of the improvisational genre, I walked into the Dan O’Connell Hotel with caution to catch Improv Conspiracy. Still, I was receptive to what was ultimately going to be an eye-opening night.

Not typically a huge fan of the improvisational genre, I walked into the Dan O’Connell Hotel with caution to catch Improv Conspiracy. Still, I was receptive to what was ultimately going to be an eye-opening night.

Carlton’s renowned hotel immediately had the feel of a cosy old pub complete with country music. It had a large range of drinks and hearty pub meals; the atmosphere was relaxed and set me up for a great night.

The function room itself was contrastingly modern and spacious, yet strangely intimate as the performers and audience sat laughing together. As soon as the performers began they harnessed not only their own imaginations, but ours as well.

The evening was split into quarters, with four teams of performers taking turns. Each asked for only one prompt, either a location or object. Seemingly banal prompts led to moments of quick and intelligent brilliance.

The teams worked together seamlessly to create 10-12 interwoven sketches that centred around the prompts. Every transition was impeccable, and the team-members seemed to read each others’ minds to decide who and what was next. There were very few slip-ups, making us all dissolve into fits of laughter - performers included!

Trying to pick a favourite performer or scene from the night is impossible. All comics had the chance to lead and follow, and every scene had a punch line. Some were bizarre, others heart-rending, some genuinely frightening. All were hilarious.

Improv Conspiracy also run improvisation workshops, which I highly recommend to any aspiring comics as this group really know what they are doing. In fact, this night made me realise what had been missing from my previous disastrous experiences of improv: professional, accomplished comics with excellent acting skills allowing everyone to have a genuinely good time.
